Course description

How to shed the anxiety habit

Anxiety disorder is an umbrella term which encompasses a heterogeneous collection of disorders, with common characteriestics. The seminar will enable the participants to identify the nature, signs and sources of anxiety and the course leaders will teach and train the participants effective, evidence-based interventions and management strategies, based on cognitive-behavioural principles.

Anxiety disorders are the most common mental illness in USA, affecting 40 million adults (18% of U.S. population, NIMH). The total number of people with anxiety disorders in England was estimated to be 2.28 million in 2007 and this is projected to rise to 2.56 million by 2026.

The seminar will address the following anxiety conditions:

  • General anxiety disorder
  • Panic attacks
  • Specific fears and phobias
  • Social anxiety
  • Health anxiety
  • Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder
  • Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder
  • Burn-out
  • Positive aspects of stress
Aims of the course

The participants will gain valuable and practical insights into the effective management of anxiety through the use of cognitive and behavioural strategies (including relaxation and mindfulness techniques.) It will also address how to supervise peers/trainees working with clients with anxiety disorders.

This course, which has the format of a seminar and a workshop, will facilitate participation, interaction and sharing of knowledge and information.

Programme

Day 1

  • Introduction to Anxiety conditions
  • Anxiety and its effects on health
  • Causes of anxiety
  • Assessment of anxiety

Day 2

  • Introduction to Cognitive-Behavioural Therapy (CBT)
  • Core principles, methods & tools of CBT
  • Mindfulness and relaxation training
  • Other useful anxiety-reducing interventions

Day 3

  • Alignment of CBT with other coping strategies
  • Presentation of cases and challenging management issues for discussion & role-play
  • Common pitfalls and trouble-shooting-do’s & don’ts!

Day 4

  • A summary of CBT for anxiety conditions
  • Relapse prevention & maintaining well-being
  • Supervision issues Supervision of professionals who work with people with anxiety
  • Evaluation

Day 5

  • Practical implementation
  • Outdoor activity
  • Evaluation – Debriefing and Closing
Designed for

Educational, counseling & clinical psychologists, counselors, social workers, day care and residential workers, support staff working in the health care or educational settings or in the voluntary sector.

Participation Fee

The fee for this course is 670 Euros. More information on these funding criteria can be found on our Erasmus+ Workshop pages. It includes tuition fee and educational material,  welcome cocktail, gala dinner,  half day excursion (optional) to idyllic Neptune Temple at Sounion Cape (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sounion) in Attica seaside.

Accommodation and meals are not included in the above fee, but can be arranged by us at special price/low cost for half or full board, in three or four star hotels in the city center. We can always manage low prices for groups. Ask us about it!

Instructors

Dr Katingo Giannoulis is a Chartered Clinical Psychologist and an Affiliate Fellow of the British Psychological Society, with membership of the Clinical and Neuropsychological Divisions. She is registered with the Health Professions Council UK. She has worked both in the UK National Health Service and in private practice for over 20 years and she provides a wide array of psychological services to adults, adolescents and children, as well as couples and families. Within her therapeutic work, Dr Giannoulis primarily adopts an eclectic model with a strong cognitive-behavioural basis. She has gained a B.A. (Hons.) in Psychology, a M.Sc. in Clinical Psychology from the University of Surrey and a Ph.D. in Psychology from the University of London. From 1996 until 2001, she was the Psychology Section Head of the Social Communications and Neurodevelopmental Disorders Clinic at Guy’s Hospital, London. From 2001 till 2008, Dr Giannoulis was a Consultant Clinical Psychologist at the Michael Rutter Centre for Children & Families, Maudsley Hospital, London. She currently has clinical practices in Athens and London.

Dr Markos Perrakis is a Chartered Psychologist, holds a Ph.D. in Organizational Psychology, M.A. in clinical Psychology, trained in Systemic Appreciative Counselling, in Constellations for personal and professional development, in Cognitive Behavior and Solution-focused Therapy, certified provider of Vocational Guidance and Professional Orientation, multilingual psychometric assessments, and coaching tools for teams and individuals in organisational, career and personality issues. Focused on the above methods, he is using an eclectic model according each case. As a lecturer and seminar facilitator he participated in open communicative lines and in scientific research groups with experience in design, implementation of training projects in Public and Private Sector. He is representative of ANSE (Association of International institutions for coaching and Supervision in Europe),
